Anurag Thakur

Our Union sports minister Anurag Thakur said in an interview on Tuesday that India is ready to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games 2036.

A roadmap will be presented to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members at the Mumbai IOC session in September 2023.

Thakur said the government would support the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) bid to host the Olympic Games. That Gujarat's Ahmedabad's world-class sporting infrastructure, Following hosting the 1982 Asian Games and 2010 Commonwealth Games, the next logical step for the Summer Olympics was India, the Union minister said.

He also said We all know that the slots are reserved until 2032. I'm confident that the government will be able to pitch in to host the Olympics in India along with IOA if India can host the G20 Presidency in such a big way. Nevertheless, in 2036, we can expect India to be fully prepared and bid for the Olympics."

If India was ready to host the Olympics in 2036, Thakur said: "Yes, India is more than willing to bid for it. There's no good reason for us to say no." If we're putting so much effort into promoting sports, we'll host the Olympics in a big way. Right now is the right time to host the Games. If India is making international headlines in every area, from manufacturing to services, why shouldn't that trend extend into sports? India has been looking very seriously at bidding for the 2036 Olympics.

In September 2023, we can present the roadmap to them (IOC members). The IOC session is a prestigious event for India, so whatever steps are taken to bid with the IOA, the government will support them. There should be a joint effort.

Several times, Gujarat has expressed interest in hosting the Olympics. In addition, the state government has a manifesto to host the Olympics in Gujarat. They have the infrastructure — hotels, hostels, airports, and sports complexes. They are serious about the bid.
